Foo Fighters

The rock band Foo Fighters was formed in Seattle, in 1994. The current lineup includes Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett, and Rami Jaffee. They are mostly famous for such hits as “Learn to Fly”, “Best of You”, and “The Pretender”. The band holds a variety of awards, including 11 Grammies and 4 BRIT awards.

Grohl wrote songs and played the guitar when he was still a teenager. He performed with many punk rock bands. In the end of 1980’s he became a drummer for the band Scream in Washington. When Scream disbanded, Grohl recorded a few of his own songs at his friend’s studio. In 1990, he started working with Nirvana. Several years later, he started thinking about a solo career. In 1995, after the death of Kurt Cobain, Grohl formed a new band Foo Fighters. His early songs played a big role in the group’s success.

In 1994, Grohl recorded a demo album Foo Fighters. The album included 15 tracks. Grohl played all the instruments himself. Dave handed out 100 copies of the album to his friends and colleagues. Immediately, recording labels started a huge fight over the chance to purchase the rights to the album. Eventually, Grohl was joined by other band members and they signed a contract with Capital Records.

In 1995, the debut album Foo Fighters was released. It immediately became popular in the US, mostly due to the song “This Is A Call”. In 1996, the band gave a variety of concerts in support of their album. The LP sold 1.3 million copies in the USA.

In 1996, the group started working on a new album. William Goldsmith left the band and his work had to be done by Grohl. The Colour and The Shape was released in 1997. The LP was more successful than the predecessor and sold over 1.9 million copies worldwide.

In 2002, the band released a hit LP One by One. After the release, they went on a UK tour. That summer English radio stations were playing such singles as “All My Life” and “Times Like These”.

In 2011, the band released their most successful album Wasting Light. It topped many European charts, Billboard 200, and UK Albums Chart. The number of the platinum certifications received by this album is truly impressive.

In 2014, the band released their last studio LP to date Sonic Highways, which was also a big success. They continue to write new songs and perform live.
