Capital Cities is an American band established in 2010 by Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian. They are mostly famous for their songs “Safe and Sound” and “Kangaroo court”. They hold an MTV Music Award.
In 2011, Capital Cities released their debut EP Capital Cities. A year later, they signed a contract with Capitol Records.
In 2012, the band released a single “Kangaroo Court”. The next song “Safe and Sound” became one of the most successful singles recorded by the band. It topped the US Alternative songs chart and got to the 8th spot of Billboard Hot 100.
In 2013, the band released their first studio album In a Tidal Wave of Mystery. The name of the album was taken from the text of the first single in the LP “Safe and Sound”. The album included other successful singles, such as “Kangaroo court”, “I Sold My Bed, but not My Stereo”. The debut album was not as successful as the band hoped. Alternative music critics mostly approved the LP while blaming Capital Cities for a monotonous style.
