SZA — American soul singer, songwriter
Solana Imani Rowe was born on 8 November 1990 in Saint Louis, Missouri. The mix of white American, Islamic, and African American roots gave the singer her special appearance, which includes beautiful curly hair and large lips. SZA is an abbreviation. S – means Solana, Z is zigzag, and A is Allah. Even though Rowe is Muslim, after 9-11 she refused to wear hijab. The girl was a rioter at heart, which later reflected on her songs.
As a child, Solana had a variety of hobbies, including gymnastics and other sports. She planned to study liberal arts in college but then changed her mind and dropped out. Rowe worked at several jobs before starting a music career. In fact, the beginning of her music career can be called accidental. Solana’s friend liked downloading music and sing together with her for fun. This friend recorded a couple of these singing sessions and uploaded them to the internet.
Hip-hop fans, critics, and bloggers approved the aspiring singer’s work. The talented girl was so happy with the great reviews that she decided to release a debut EP See.SZA.RUN. The album didn’t make it into the charts but earned popularity on the internet.
In April 2013, the young singer released her second EP, S. Again, the album didn’t make it into the charts but received many positive comments and reviews from the critics. Solana was inspired by such popularity. Many fans were trying to book SZA for their private events.
The success of the self-released EPs helped Rowe sign a contract in TDE. After sealing the deal, she finally released a debut official album Z (2014). The EP reached the 39th spot of Billboard 200 and made it to the 5th position of Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album also fared well in the UK.
Solana was planning to release another album from the trilogy and call it A. However, she changed her mind and decided to record a studio album, which was called Ctrl. The LP came out in June 2017 and was a success. It reached the 3rd spot of Billboard 200, climbed to the 11th spot of UK R&B Chart, and earned a platinum certification from RIAA. One of the most successful songs from the album was “Love Galore”. It was called one of the 10 best songs of 2017. The single received five Grammy nominations but didn’t win any of them.
In 2018, SZA won an NAACP Image Awards as Outstanding New Artist. She was nominated for this award in three more categories, two of which were for “Love Galore”. The same year, she recorded a song for the Marvel’s movie Black Panther. The single “All The Stars” was performed with Kendrick Lamar. The song reached the 7th spot of Billboard Hot 100 and received several platinum and gold certificates.
Solana collaborates with many famous artists, such as Rihanna and Nikki Minaj. She is also working on her own fashion line.
