Islam Makhachev (born September 27, 1991, in Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia) is a professional mixed martial artist and the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion. A proud Dagestani of Lak ethnicity, Makhachev is renowned for his elite grappling, wrestling, and submission skills, honed under the tutelage of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov and later Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Islam grew up in the mountainous village of Burshi, where he was introduced to combat sports at a young age. Drawing from Dagestan’s rich wrestling culture, he developed a formidable base in Sambo, a discipline in which he achieved international acclaim. He became the 2016 World Combat Sambo Champion, further solidifying his reputation as one of the sport's finest.
Makhachev made his professional MMA debut in 2010 and quickly climbed the ranks with his technical precision and fight IQ. He joined the UFC in 2015, steadily building a record defined by dominant grappling, top control, and improved striking. His long-time friendship and partnership with Khabib Nurmagomedov significantly shaped his career, with Khabib serving as his mentor and coach.
In October 2022, Makhachev claimed the UFC Lightweight title by defeating Charles Oliveira at UFC 280.
