  • Larry Bird, born December 7, 1956, in West Baden Springs, Indiana, is a retired professional basketball player, coach, and executive, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history. Known as "The Hick from French Lick," Bird combined exceptional skill, court vision, and a fierce competitive spirit to dominate the game during the 1980s.

Bird played college basketball at Indiana State University, where he led the Sycamores to the 1979 NCAA Championship game, a historic matchup against Michigan State and Magic Johnson. He was selected sixth overall in the 1978 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics, where he played his entire career (1979–1992).

As a Celtic, Bird won three NBA championships (1981, 1984, 1986) and was a three-time league MVP (1984–1986). Renowned for his scoring, passing, rebounding, and clutch performances, Bird was a 12-time All-Star and a member of the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. His intense rivalry with Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers defined a golden era of basketball and helped revive the NBA’s global popularity.

After retiring as a player, Bird excelled as a coach and executive, becoming the only person in NBA history to win MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year. A Hall of Fame inductee in 1998, Bird's legacy as a transcendent talent and competitor continues to inspire generations of basketball players.
