Shaila Durcal - Spanish singer and songwriter (real name Shaila de los Ángeles Morales de las Heras) was born in Madrid on 28 August 1979. Her parents Rocio Durcal and Antonio Morales were famous music artists. Shaila was the youngest of their three children and the only one, who decided to pursue a music career.
When Durcal was just three years old, it became obvious that she has a true talent and desire to become a singer. Shaila grew up listening to different music from rock songs by Earth, Wind, & Fire to ranchera and flamenco. When she turned 12, Shaila got her first TV gig. She was invited to sing together with Nikka Costa on the TV show Noches.
When Shaila was a teenager, she became very serious about her music career. She went to study vocals in Madrid. When the artist turned 17, Rocio invited the young women to join her on a tour. Together with her mother, Shaila traveled all over Latin America, USA, and Europe. She didn’t just get priceless performing experience, Durcal learned how to deal with the audience.
When Shaila turned 21, she decided to pursue a solo career. In 2001, she moved to Mexico and signed a contract with BMG label.
In 2004, Durcal released her first studio album Shaila, which reached the 99th spot on the Mexican Albums Chart. The young women didn’t stop there. She immediately started working on her next LP Recordando. While Shaila was recording the album, Rocio died from uterine cancer. The young woman was so shocked by her mother’s sudden death that she completely changed the album. Durcal recorded the interpretations of Rocio’s most popular songs and included them in the album.
The LP became very popular in Spain, Mexico, USA, and France. It topped the Spanish charts and reached the 78th spot on Billboard. The LP was certified platinum twice in Mexico. The single “Vuélvete La Luna” topped the Spanish Singles Chart and became the most popular Shaila’s song to date.
In 2008, Durcal released her new album, Tanto Amor. It reached the 5th spot on the Spanish chart and received a golden certification. In Mexico, the LP was less popular but still made it into the charts. The single "Tanto Cielo Perdido" reached the 16th spot on the singles chart in Chile. The artist was at the peak of her popularity. Booking Shaila Durcal for an event was becoming harder and harder.
In 2009, Shaila recorded another LP Corazón Ranchero. It was less popular than her previous work but still managed to make it into Spanish and Mexican charts. More than 20,000 copies were sold in Mexico. For the first time, one of Shaila’s albums was more popular in Mexico than in Spain.
Shaila recorded two more successful LPs Asi (2011) and Shaila Dúrcal (2015). In November 2017, she became a host of the TV show, which covered Latin Grammy Awards. Shaila herself was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2007.
Even though Shaila was very busy in the music industry, she found some time for an acting career. Durcal got secondary roles in three Mexican soap operas.
