Andra – Romanian R&B and pop singer
Andra’s real name is Alexandra Irina Mihai. She was born on 23 August 1986 in Romania.
Andra began her career rather early. In 2001, she released a debut album, Andra after signing a contract with Nova Music Entertainment. The LP featured such songs as “Pe Tine Te Iubesc”, “În Noapte Mă Trezesc”, “Sună Telefonul”, “Nu Regret”, and others. However, it wasn’t commercially successful. The singer didn’t give up and continued working on new songs.
A year later, with the same label, Andra recorded her second studio LP, Dragostea mea. It helped her earn a good reputation in the local music industry.
In 2004, Andra changed the label to Media Services and released one more album, Vreau sărutarea ta. Local fans gave high scores to the following songs, “Vreau Sărutarea Ta”, “Dă-mi O Clipă”, “Vreau Sărutarea Ta”, “Speran a Mea”. The first single appeared on local radio stations. At that time, some organizers tried to book Andra for their events. She often accepted the invitations.

In 2006, the singer signed a contracted with another label, Cat Music, and presented one more album, Rămâi cu mine. It featured such popular songs as “Băieii i Fetele Ce Vor”, “Voi Fi Cu Tine”, “Rămâi Cu Mine”, “Ascultă-i Inima,” and “Doar O Clipă”. Since all her songs were written in Romanian language, Andra was mostly popular in her native Romania. However, she was dreaming of becoming an international celebrity.
In 2007, she presented one more LP, Dragostea rămâne, recorded with the assistance of Compania de Radio Pro. The local fans appreciate new hits, such as “Dragostea Rămâne”, “One In A Million”, “We Go Crazy”, “Move Your Body”, and “Fierbinte”. This album featured several songs in English, showing Andra’s wish to conquer American and European music industry. Andra herself explained her switch to the English language as a desire to bring her songs to other people so everyone could enjoy them.
The same year, she recorded one more LP, Colinde - Vis de iarnă (Carols - Winter's Dream). It conquered the national charts and appeared on many Romanian radio stations.
In 2010, the singer presented the next LP, Lube te-mă azi, iube te-mă mâine (eng. Love Me Today, Love Me Tomorrow). This time she worked with MediaPro Music Entertainment. It featured such hits as “Bye, Bye Baby”, “Iubeşte-mă Azi”, “Iubeşte-mă Mâine”, “Give Me Some More”, “Zâmbesc Şi Gata”, “Aripi De Iubire”, and others.
Between 2010 and 2017, the artist didn’t release any studio albums. However, she was working on polishing her skills and promoting her songs for international fame. In March 2017, Andra recorded a new LP, Lubirea schimbă tot. It featured several hits, including “Ocean De Vise”, “Inimi De Ceară”, “Îngerii”, and “Fericirea Nu Se Dă Pe Bani. The LP earned great reviews from Romanian critics.
In 2013, Andra was nominated for MTV Europe Music Award as Best Romanian Act. The next year, she won the prize. During that period, the singer recorded her most popular song “Why”, which climbed to the 8th spot of Billboard Hot 100. The song brought Andra the long-awaited international fame. The music video for the single was uploaded to YouTube in 2016. Over two years, it collected more than 200 million views.
Andra’s music is highly valued in Romania. She became one of the judges for the popular Romanian talent show Românii au talent. The singer also lent her voice to the characters of the Romanian version of Kung Fu Panda 3 in 2016 and Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2017.
Throughout her career, Andra worked with such European celebrities as Direc ia 5, Dan Bittman, Marius Moga, Vunk, What's Up, Marcel Pavel, and Simplu. She continues recording new songs and performing live.
