  • Alanis Morissette was born on June 1, 1974, in Canada. She is a singer, a songwriter, an actress, and a record producer. She is mostly known for her alternative rock songs, such as “Ironic”, “Thank U”, and “You Oughta Know”.

    When she was just 11 years old, Alanis recorded her first single “Fate Stay with Me”. For that song, she was nominated for Juno Award (Canadian equivalent of Grammy). Three years later, she signed a contract with MCA Canada.

    In 1991, Alanis moved to Toronto where she released her first album, Alanis. The album sold over 100,000 copies. Thanks to that album, Alanis won the Juno award as the “Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year”.

    In 1992, Morissette released her second LP New is the Time. It sold about 50,000 copies in Canada.

  • In 1993, Morisette moved to LA and in 1995, a contract with Maverick Records and released her first American album Jagged Little Pill. Thanks to a hit single “You Oughta Know”, which went on MTV, the album became a hit of summer 1995. Jagged Little Pill sold 28 million copies worldwide (16 million in the USA). It topped Billboard 200 and entered top-10 of the Canadian, UK and German charts.

    In 1996, Alanis was nominated for six Grammy awards and won four, including “Best Female Rock Vocal Performance” and best single for “You Oughta Know”. Soon after, she released the 4th single from the same album. “Ironic” reached 4th place on Billboard Hot 100.

    In 1998, she released a new album Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. It sold 7 million copies and topped Billboard 200. The album also brought Alanis another Grammy award.

    In 1999, Alanis was cast for the movie Dogma. She enjoyed acting and went further to appear in Sex And the City and star in The Vagina Monologues. Later the same year she released a live acoustic album “MTV Unplugged”. It sold 2 million copies in 6 months.

    In 2002, she released a new album Under Rug Swept, which she produced herself.

    In the early 2000’s her popularity was still going strong as she released three more albums: So-Called Chaos (2004), Flavors of Entanglement (2008), and Havoc and Bright Lights (2012). Morissette continues to write songs, perform, produce, and act.
