MANÁ is a rock music band from Mexico. In 1978, in Guadalajara, Mexico, five teenagers - Fhernando Olvera (Fher), Gustavo Orosko, brothers Juan, Abraham and Ulises Calleros – created a music band to rock in their native language. Back then, Spanish rock wasn’t popular yet. The band was named The Green Hat Spies. Then “Spies” were dropped, and the name was later changed to Sombrero Verde (Green Hat in Spanish). In 1981, the first album, “Sombrero Verde”, was released. Singles from the LP quickly became popular. In 1984 and 1986, the band’s lineup went through some changes Abraham Calleros and Gustavo Orosko left the team. They were replaced by Alex Gonsales, who later became a leader of the group.
At this time in Mexico, the movement “Rock at your language” was becoming popular among recording studios. They advocated creating rock music in Spanish. To keep up with the trend, Fher decided to rename the team and change the direction their music was taking. Now the band created a combination of pop, rock and Latin rhythms. Maná was born. The latest album was very popular. It sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. But the global recognition came to the band in 1993, when they went on a tour that included concerts in 17 countries. Maná was popular in Latin communities in the USA, Chilly, Ecuador, and Peru. It took immense effort to book Mana in the 90’s for any event. Last changes in Maná lineup took place in 1994. The guitarist Sergeo Vallin joined the team. The cooperation with him produced the album “Cuando Los Ángeles Lloran” in 1995. The LP brought Mana a Grammy. Overall, throughout their career, Mana musicians received 4 Grammy Awards, 7 Latin Grammy Awards, 5 MTV Video Music Awards Latin America, 5 Premios Juventud, 9 Billboard Latin Music Awards and 13 Premio Lo Nuestro. Today, the band continues giving concerts and goes on tours in Latin America.
